Block of the Month 2019-2020
Whether you are an experienced quilter or just curious about appliqué (the technique of placing fabric shapes on a back ground to create an image), you are sure to enjoy the 2019- 2020 Block of the Month “Ola Kai”. Ola Kai is Hawaiian for Ocean Life, and this quilt abounds with animals found in the oceans around Hawai’i. Designed by textile artist Eileen Uchima exclusively for the Chicago Ridge Public Library Block of the Month program, this project will offer an introduction to multiple appliqué techniques. From fusible appliqué, to machine appliqué to hand needle-turn, you will learn how to select the right technique and fabric for your project. The quilt contains six different feature blocks plus pieced spacer blocks and borders providing opportunities for hand and machine sewing. Each month, participants will receive instructions and demonstrations of techniques used in one of the blocks. Members will then complete their own blocks at home, bringing them back for a show-and-tell at the next class. Participants choose their own fabric to guarantee a finished quilt that they will love!
