In 2021, it will be twenty years since the Chicago Ridge Public Library completed its expansion, nearly doubling in size. Today, our library is being used differently than it was when we built the addition. Furniture, flooring, finishes, and wiring have become worn and outdated. It is time to renew and re-imagine our space to meet the changing needs of our community.
In 2018-19, the Chicago Ridge Public Library surveyed library users, community stakeholders, and library staff to gain insights on what improvements need to be made to the library, including its physical condition and spaces. Using your input, the Library Board of Trustees hired the architectural firm Product Architecture + Design to design a new space with the goal of improving patron experience and creating inviting, flexible spaces where patrons can work, play, relax and read.
This Fall, the library will begin construction to refresh, upgrade and redesign the public interior spaces of the library. The renovation plans include the addition of two new study rooms; the enclosure of the adult services department and the relocation of the adult services workroom to create a light-filled space for patrons; integrated power in furniture to easily plug in electronic devices, the rearrangement of shelving and seating in the circulation, youth services, and adult services areas; a complete update of the public restrooms and large meeting room; and new finishes and new furnishings throughout the library.
We expect the renovation to begin in September and for it to be complete within four to five months. The library plans to remain open during construction with limited closures to facilitate the work. The project will be funded with library reserves carefully stewarded by the Library Board of Trustees.
